Director of Children’s Ministry

The Director of Children’s Ministry for CUMC will support the church’s mission to Love GOD, Love OTHERS, and SERVE the World with a specific emphasis on developing our youngest disciples and supporting their families through relationships, programming, and collaboration with other staff and volunteers. The Director will be the main innovator and lead teacher for children and their families as CUMC continues its work of sharing the Good News in Word and example, developing a community of love and forgiveness to surround the children in our care, so that they may grow in their trust in God, service to others, and become true disciples in their own right.

Essential Functions
  • Create and implement impactful and engaging learning opportunities for children relating to their faith and development in collaboration with the CUMC Children’s Council. Current activities are listed below.
    • Weekly: Sunday morning Sunday school, Sunday Children’s Message in worship service, Sunday evening program (runs concurrent with youth program), Wednesday night program.
    • Seasonal: Coordinating with Children’s Choir to sing in worship services, appropriate mission projects, Coordination with Family Ministry for special Wednesday night dinners and activities.
    • Yearly: Vacation Bible School in June, Church Family Picnic (Coordinated with Family Ministry team), Easter egg hunt/Palm Sunday celebration, Back to School Bash, Retreat for 3rd-5th graders, Blessing of the Backpacks, 3rd Grade Bible class and presentation, Super Bowl Bake Sale Fundraiser, HOPE Place Mission project, Fall Festival Cake Walk, Advent activities (wreaths, gingerbread house night).
  • Develop and maintain a volunteer pool within CUMC, not limited to parents with children currently active in the ministry, including shared responsibility for staffing nursery and ensuring CUMC’s Safe Sanctuary Policy is adhered to for said volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the Family Ministries team, Worship committee, and other CUMC volunteers and staff to integrate Children’s Ministry into the full life of the church.
  • Prepare and maintain a calendar of Children’s activities to be communicated to the church and community in a timely fashion in collaboration with staff and volunteers.
  • Communicate and promote opportunities, events, and ministries within the scope of this position, both within the congregation and the broader community (including but not limited to social media posts, building posters, newsletter articles, etc.)


Other Responsibilities
  • Manage the Children’s Ministry budget and designated fund, allowing for adequate supplies, materials, and curriculum for planned activities and ministry programs. Order and purchase needed items in coordination with church office.
  • Participate in CUMC staff and committee meetings in order to share and promote the healthy inclusion of children and their families in the life of the church.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must have a commitment to Jesus Christ and the desire and ability to foster faith development in others, particularly children and their families.
  • Enthusiasm and energy for ministry with all children and their families.
  • Minimum of three years relevant experience working directly with children.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate Christian education approaches and ability to articulate theology for children of all ages.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including online.
  • Ability to pass a background check screening.


Preferred Experience

  • Higher education degree in a related field.
  • Formal education or equivalent training in ministry with children and families.
  • Experience directing and developing teams of volunteers in ministry contexts.


Physical Requirements
  • Able to speak in a public forum.
  • Able to move freely through the church education buildings, sanctuary, and gymnasium.
  • Able to work on feet for up to three hours at a time, set up tables and chairs, lift up to 45 pounds, and participate in indoor and outdoor activities.
